| This year's Kentucky Derby
winner, Golden Tempo, has a pedigree full of American class and stamina. How do
I know that? Well, he's by Curlin who was Horse of the Year at 3 and 4, won the
classic Preakness Stakes at 1 3/16 miles and scored 4 Grade 1 wins at the American
classic distance of 1 1/4 mile, in the Dubai World Cup, Breeders' Cup Classic
and twice in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Curlin has also proven himself as a sire
of top runners who can go long including last year's Preakness winner Journalism.
His sons Keen Ice (winner of the Travers Stakes) and Good Magic have sired three
classic winners between them: Rich Strike, Mage and Dornoch. Curlin's sire Smart
Strike also sired Preakness winner Lookin At Lucky who sired Kentucky Derby winner
Country House. Golden Tempo's dam, Carrumba, was a Grade 3 winner at 1 1/8
miles. She's a daughter of Champion three-year-old Bernardini who won the Preakness
Stakes and added 1 1/4 mile victories in the Travers and Jockey Club Gold Cup.
Bernardini's daughters are proving to be gold and have also produced the 2025
Kentucky Derby/Belmont Stakes winner Sovereignty and this year's outstanding older
runners Magnitude and Nysos. Bernardini was by Belmont Stakes winner A.P. Indy,
one of America's top sources of stamina, whose sire was Triple Crown winner Seattle
Slew. This background made Golden Tempo a likely success in the Kentucky Derby
and Belmont Stakes, both this year at 1 1/4 miles. He's a strong candidate for
the Travers Stakes, also at 1 1/4 miles but that's yet to be decided. If the
reader isn't familiar with the pedigrees of recent classic winners, he or she
might not know all this trivia, or know where to look to get that information.
Considering that, I offer the accompanying pair of tables to help interpret the
speed and stamina input of key sires in a horse's pedigree. The lists include
current active proven stallions - those with four-year-olds and older - as well
as important stallions commonly found in modern pedigrees, most foaled after 1980.
I don't claim them to be complete lists but evolving ones. The data notes each
stallion's own average winning distance (AWD), then his own longest winning distance
followed by his progeny's AWD. I've limited these lists to stallions with four-year-olds
or older because progeny AWD is a number I don't feel is very reliable until they
have three or four crops racing. The averages will probably change over time,
especially for the younger horses as more runners get out there and prove themselves.
I'll try to update these regularly. These numbers were taken from their race
records and from the American Produce Records (APRs) via Brisnet.com through July
4, 2026. While the APRs give a horse's AWD to two decimal points, I've rounded
up to one decimal point because that's how the APRs present a stallion's progeny
AWDs in their stallion statistics, an annoying inconsistency. Average winning
distance is pretty straight forward, being the cumulative number of furlongs a
horse has won over divided by his number of wins. This is a good guage of a runner's
talent, although keep in mind a horse that can run second or third in Grade 1
races at a classic distance without winning but still be considered to have significant
stamina. For example, Hard Spun's AWD is 7.36 furlongs and the longest race he
ever won was at nine furlongs, but he ran second in the Kentucky Derby (10f.)
to Street Sense, third in the Preakness (9.5f.) to Curlin and Street Sense, and
second in the Breeders Cup Classic (10f.) to Curlin. Interpreting a stallion's
progeny AWD is a little more nuanced. Roughly half the races in North America
are run at sprint distances of 6 furlongs or less, and most horses start out at
these shorter distances before they graduate to longer races in finding their
best aptitude. That means most horses are going to have at least one win at a
sprint distance and many may never win again, so the bias is for a shorter progeny
AWD overall. That's why a horse whose personal AWD is 7 furlongs or over is important
if you're looking for stamina. Likewise, a stallion whose progeny AWD is 7 furlongs
or over is worth noting for a potential source of added stamina. Hard Spun's progeny
AWD is 7.4 furlongs suggestinging that his classic placings were not flukes, although
added stamina could also be coming through his mates. Any stallion's progeny AWD
is obviously going to be influenced by the aptitude of the mares he receives as
well as his own. In the far right column of both tables are my notes, generalizations
based on a stallion's aptitude interpreted through his race record and those for
his best runners. You may agree or disagree with my observations and opinions
and you're encouraged to come to your own conclusions. I've abbreviated the more
noted classic races (K for Kentucky Derby, P for Preakness, etc.) and some other
important races that seem significant to these stallions and their progeny. Here's
a key to these abbreviations:

find this information more useful than any sort of modern (i.e. Roman's) Dosage
pigeon-holing, especially since I disagree with a large number of the more recently
assigned chefs-de-race. Unlike those assignments, my stallion lists include
such tremendously influential sires as Storm Cat and Danehill who are significantly
missing in Roman's chefs-de-race. At some point I'll address Dosage Analysis
as a breeding theory but that's for another day. (Spoiler Alert: I'm not a fan.) Table
1 lists these influential stallions alphabetically for easy reference. Table 2
lists these same sires by progeny AWD from longest to shortest, so the reader
can see which stallions are throwing more stamina, moving down the list to which
are more dominant for limited sprinter speed. For aptitudes, I note sprinters
as horses limited to 7 furlongs or shorter; milers include runners who excel from
7 furlongs out to 8.5 furlongs, which is admittedly longer than a mile (8f.) but
not by much; and routers, those who excel past 8.5 furlongs. Routers would include
winners at the classic distance, who would be noted by their classic win(s), and
sires of classic winners are noted as such, suggesting that they impart some degree
of stamina. Looking down the list of stallions in Table 2 (sorted
by progeny AWD) there is overall a close correlation between the aptitude of stallions
who were themselves winners at the highest level going the American classic distance
(10 furlongs) and the ability of their progeny. This shouldn't come as a big surprise
although there are a few exceptions. Topping this table are Dynaformer
and Kingmambo, both with a progeny AWD of 8.5 furlongs. Dynaformer is no surprise,
a Grade 2 winner at 10 furlongs and a winner as far as 1 1/2 miles. His progeny
included Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro and English St. Leger winner Lucarno among
many other top distance performers. Dynaformer was by English Derby winner Roberto,
a strain that is also represented on this list by stamina sources Kris S. (pAWD
8.1f.), his son Arch (pAWD 7.9f.) and Arch's son Blame (pAWD 7.3f.). Kingmambo
is more of a mystery, since he was an oustanding miler in Europe, by the speed
demon Mr. Prospector and out of the champion miler Miesque by champion miler Nureyev.
As a sire, Kingmambo left all sorts of runners, including Belmont Stakes winner
Lemon Drop Kid. Although he might be expected to be more of a miler influence,
his progeny's added stamina may come from the more classically-bred mares he was
bred to in order to stretch out his miler ability, or it could be he just passed
on incredible class that allowed his progeny to run further than expected, much
like his ancestor Nearco.
Next on the list are El Gran Senor, A.P. Indy,
English Channel and Pleasant Colony, Declaration of War, Giant's Causeway, Kris
S., Cozzene, Danzig and Street Cry (IRE), all with progeny AWDs over 8.0 furlongs.
It's worth noting that most of these added-stamina types are also sires with a
turf bias. One reason for this may be because there are seem to be more turf races
at longer distances than dirt stamina tests, especially in Europe. Don't leap
to conclusions, though, because there are a lot of sprint-oriented sires in Europe
right now, so don't automatically presume a turf horse or a European-bred horse
is going to pass on stamina. On the opposited end of the aptitude spectrum
are the professional sprinters who tend to sire their own speedy type. The horses
on this list with the shortest progeny AWD are Kantharos and Maclean's Music,
both at 6.2 furlongs. Kantharos was precocious, winner of Graded stakes sprinting
at two before a career-ending injury in August that year. He's bred to go a little
farther, being by Lion Heart (winner of the Haskell and second in the Kentucky
Derby) out of a mare by router Southern Halo. Had he stayed sound, he may have
done well in the spring classic preps and maybe gone further than a mile but his
almost pure sprinting progeny AWD suggests otherwise. Maclean's Music made
only one start, as a three-year-old, scoring in a 6 furlong maiden in brilliant
fashion but complications following removal of a fractured splint bone forced
an early retirement to stud. His first crop included Preakness winner Cloud Computing
(out of a mare by A.P. Indy) but the majority of his runners have been more like
his high class sprinters Jackie's Warrior and Drain the Clock, or the sprinter/miler
Complexity. Maclean's Music's pedigree suggests he has the right to throw a little
more stamina than he showed, being by Distorted Humor out of an Unbridled's Song
mare, but apparently he's more of a speed-dominant, as his conformation suggests.
In an ideal world, we'd all be trying to breed a classic level racehorse,
a horse who steps up as a three-year-old to win at the highest level over the
American classic distance of ten furlongs. Despite the market trend that favors
a precocious speed type, recent history shows that if you want a horse in the
Kentucky Derby, it's a better bet to use a sire who has proven ability out to
ten furlongs rather than a limited sprinter. That seems obvious to me but you'd
be surprised how often I have to point out these aptitudes in helping an owner
with matings or purchases. They often want to use the hottest freshman sires who
are often high class speed horses like Vekoma and Yaupon. These guys are terrific
sires of sprinters and sprinter/milers but they have not yet proven themselves
as sources of classic ability. They will definitely need mares with more obvious
stamina close up in their pedigrees to stretch these speedsters. Remember, the
big money is in the longer distances, and who doesn't want to win the Kentucky
