| On my home page I maintain a list of what I refer to as "Rising Broodmare Sires." It's a list of top broodmare sires sorted by the number of stakes winners their daughters have produced, but is restricted (by me, rather arbitrarily) to stallions whose daughters are not that old. The current list is limited to sires foaled after 1995. It allows readers to see which young broodmare sires are starting to make a mark in this category. More than a few of the regular readers tell me that they love this list because it gives them a heads-up on investing in younger mares with good broodmare potential. I thought I'd look at broodmare sires from another angle this time, by comparing the top sires of stakes winners from each sire crop (based on the year they went to stud) compared to those that became the best broodmare sires, starting from the same point in time. I limited the stallions to those that entered stud in North America because getting up-to-date statistics from foreign-based sires is even harder than it is to get accurate statistics for North American ones. I started with those stallions who went to stud in 2013 because they're the first with any sort of numbers as broodmare sires. It's still early days for these young broodmare sires but watching their records develop is part of the education. It's a little surprising to find that the sire crop of 2013, which was led by introductory stud fee by Union Rags ($35,000), Bodemeister ($30,000) and To Honor and Serve ($30,000) is now led by number of stakes winners so far, by The Factor, with 42, who started in 2013 at a fee of $15,000. Bodemeister, exported to Turkey in 2020, is second with 35 stakes winners. Gemologist, sold to South Korea in 2022, is joint third with 29 stakes winners with Stay Thirsty, who is now one of the best sires in California. Creative Cause has sired 28 stakes winners so far. Surprising again, is the fact that Creative Cause is the early leader as a broodmare sire with 4 stakes winners so far, with The Factor siring two. These are the only sires in the group at this early stage with more than 1 stakes winners as a broodmare sire. The 2012 crop of sires is led by the remarkably good stallion Uncle Mo, with 96 stakes winners so far. He's also the top broodmare sire with 11 stakes winners to date. Drosselmeyer is the second ranked sire of stakes winners with 60, due in part to his success as a sire in Brazil. He is the dam's sire of 2 stakes winners to date. Twirling Candy has 38 stakes winners and also is the broodmare sire of 2 stakes winners. First Dude is the only other broodmare sire in this group with more than 1 stakes winner, and he has 2 so far. The sires starting out in 2011 are a more consistent group. It's a tie between Lookin At Lucky and Quality Road, both with 78 stakes winners. Lookin At Lucky is third as a broodmare sire (7). Quality Road is joint-fourth as a broodmare sire with 5 stakes winners. More importantly is the fact that the early leader of this sire class as a broodmare sire is Blame (sire of49 stakes winners) with 14 stakes winners through his daughters. It's noteworthy that both Blame and #2 broodmare sire Warrior's Reward (9 stakes winners) are both out of mares by the top broodmare sire Seeking the Gold. The 2010 class of sires is
even more straightforward, as Pioneerof the Nile and Colonel John are first and
second in both categories. Pioneerof the Nile died prematurely in 2019 at the
age of 13. He now is the dam's sire of 9 stakes winners. Colonel John was sent
to South Korea in 2016. He was returned to the U.S. to live out his days at Old
Friends in Kentucky in 2021. He is the broodmare sire of 7 stakes winners. The year 2009 was important because that's the year Into Mischief entered stud. He now has at least 139 stakes winners and is one of the early leaders as a broodmare sire with 11 stakes winners. While he tops Curlin by number of stakes winners, Curlin currently leads as a broodmare sire with 15. First Defence, underappreciated as as sire and sent to Saudi Arabia for the 2017 season, is a growing influence as a broodmare sire with 12 stakes winners so far, one more than Into Mischief at the same stage in their stud careers. For the 2008 class, Scat Daddy and Hard Spun take turns as #1 and #2 in sire and broodmare sire categories, with Street Sense in third place on both lists. Discreet Cat, sent to Japan for the 2017 season, is the broodmare sire of 17 stakes winners. For the sire class of 2007, War Front is the leader by stakes winners, but Bernardini's daughters are proving to be really golden as broodmares, with 71 stakes winners so far, compared to War Front with 22, which is good enough for second place. Henny Hughes, now in Japan, is the third leading broodmare sire by stakes winners, with 20. Pensioned Congrats is fourth with 18. The sires entering stud in 2006 were led by stakes winners by Kitten's Joy, Ghostzapper, Roman Ruler and Afleet Alex. Put their names in a bag and shake it up and you get the leading broodmare sires Ghostzapper (38), Kitten's Joy (33), Afleet Alex (21) and Roman Ruler (20). Browse through these lists and see if you can glean something useful when it comes to shopping for broodmares, or even breeding one of your own.
